Immersive Putting: Everything you need to know

Immersive Putting: Everything you need to know

Every golfer knows where the strokes go. Not the tee shot you flushed on 12. The six-footer you left short on 13, and the one you burned the edge with on 15. Putting is roughly 40 percent of the strokes in a round, and it is the part of the game almost nobody gets to practice on a Tuesday night in February.

Immersive Putting is now live in GOLF+. It lets you set a real putter behind a real golf ball in your own living room, look down through your headset, and see a true virtual green rolling out in front of you. Your stroke is your stroke. Your ball is your ball. The read, the speed and the result are real.

Here is everything you need to know.

Immersive Putting is a new mixed reality experience within GOLF+

What is Immersive Putting?

Immersive Putting is a mixed reality putting experience inside GOLF+. Instead of putting with a controller in a fully virtual world, you use your own equipment in your own room.

The headset shows you your actual surroundings through passthrough, then lays a virtual putting green over your floor. You address a real ball with a real putter. When you make a stroke, the ball rolls across your carpet and the green picks it up, carrying it over the contour, breaking the way that contour says it should break, and either finding the bottom of the cup or sliding by.

How it works

  1. Passthrough and room mapping. Your headset reads your space and understands where your floor is. The virtual green is anchored to that floor, so it sits flat and stays put while you walk around it and get behind your line.
  2. Real ball tracking. The headset tracks your actual golf ball. When you strike it, the launch direction and speed of that roll are captured precisely to produce the simulation into the virtual space.
  3. Green physics. From there, GOLF+ takes over. The ball carries onto the virtual surface at the speed and on the line you gave it, and the contour, the grain and the stimp do the rest. Push it and you miss right. Leave it short and it dies below the hole. Everything you already know about how a putt behaves is exactly how it behaves.

What you need

A Meta Quest 3 or Quest 3S. Immersive Putting relies on color passthrough and the depth sensing on these headsets, so Quest 3 and Quest 3S are the supported devices. Quest 2 does not support it.

GOLF+ PASS. Immersive Putting is included with GOLF+ PASS at no extra cost. Players can subscribe to the GOLF+ PASS at a discounted cost of $49.99 for the first year and $99.99/year after that, and it also unlocks the full library of 40+ championship courses, tournaments and events. If you have never had PASS, there is a 7 day free trial, so you can putt before you decide.

Your own putter and ball. Whatever is in your bag.

A few feet of space. Enough room to take your normal stroke and let the ball get moving. Most players find a hallway, a living room or an open corner of a basement is plenty.

A reasonably lit room and a contrasting surface. Passthrough and ball tracking both work off the headset cameras, so a room you can comfortably read in will serve you better than a dark one.

The data behind every putt

Practice without feedback is just repetition. The reason most home putting fails is that you cannot see what you actually did, only where the ball ended up on a flat surface.

Immersive Putting gives you the numbers on every stroke:

  • Start line. Where the ball actually began, in degrees. The hardest thing in golf to self-diagnose, and the root of most missed short putts.
  • Speed and pace. How your putt compares to the pace that surface actually requires.
  • Result and proximity. Made, or how far past and to which side.
  • Trends over time. Whether the miss is a pattern or a one-off.

That is what turns twenty minutes on a Tuesday into something that shows up on a Saturday. You are not guessing which way you pushed it. You are told, on every putt, and you can go fix it while your hands still remember the stroke.

What makes this different from other home putting?

There are really only three other ways to putt indoors, and each one gives something up.

A flat mat gives up the golf. There is no break, no slope and no read, so you groove a straight four footer on a perfect surface and then stand over a downhill left-to-righter on the first green with no idea what to do. Most mats also tell you nothing about your stroke.

A camera and a TV gives up your eyes. The data on those systems is genuinely good, but you hit the putt and then look up at a screen across the room to find out what happened. Putting is a discipline of looking down, and most of those systems also put you on the same short mat from the same fixed spot with something stuck to your putter.

A projector green gives up your house and your budget. These are excellent, and they are also a 60 square foot installation, several hundred pounds of it, a minimum ceiling height, a room you no longer use for anything else, and thousands of dollars. Putt length is usually capped around nine feet.

Immersive Putting gives up none of that. Your eyes stay down on a real ball, the way they do over a real putt. The green underneath it has real contour from a real course, at any distance and from any position on the surface, not one fixed spot. Nothing attaches to your putter and nothing needs storing when you are done. And when you take the headset off putting, the same 40+ courses are sitting there waiting to be played.

The closet version of home putting asks you to practice something adjacent to golf. This one just asks you to putt.
