Muirfield Village was the brainchild of Jack Nicklaus, earning its nickname of "Jack's Place".

Jack's Place

The vision for Muirfield Village Golf Club began in the early 1960s when Jack Nicklaus, fresh off his victory at the U.S. Amateur Championship, dreamed of creating a golf course that would challenge and inspire the best players in the world. Collaborating with renowned course architect Desmond Muirhead, Nicklaus set out to design a course that would pay homage to the traditions of golf while incorporating modern elements to enhance playability.

Nicklaus derived the name as a way to pay tribute to Muirfield Golf Links in Scotland, where he won his first British Open Championship in 1966. The design of Muirfield Village reflects Nicklaus's appreciation for strategic shot-making and his belief in creating a fair but challenging test for golfers of all skill levels.

Over the years, Nicklaus has been proactive in making changes to Muirfield Village to counter the growing length and skill of today's professional golfers. A major renovation took place in 2020 that saw an overhaul of all 18 greens, repositioning (and removal) of bunkers, and additional tee boxes to lengthen the course by more than 150 yards.

The Memorial Tournament has been hosted at Muirfield Village since its debut in 1976.

The Memorial Tournament

Since its inception in 1976, the Memorial Tournament has been a staple event on the PGA TOUR calendar, attracting the game's best players to Muirfield Village. Jack Nicklaus established the Memorial Tournament with a vision to create a unique event that celebrates the game of golf and pays tribute to its legends. Each year, the tournament honors a select group of past champions, recognizing their contributions to the sport.

The consistent changes made to the course add an additional layer that separates Muirfield Village from other yearly PGA TOUR venues. These modifications ensure that the course remains a true test of skill and strategy, maintaining its reputation as one of the most challenging and respected venues on the calendar.

The list of past champions includes: Tom Watson, Greg Norman, Fred Couples, and Jim Furyk. Nicklaus was a two-time winner of the Memorial Tournament, while Tiger Woods' five first-place finishes are the most all-time. Woods famously won the Memorial in three consecutive years from 1999-2001. In the history of the PGA TOUR, there have only been 11 occurrences where a player has won the same event three years in a row - six of those were by Tiger.

Signature Hole

12th Hole - Par 3

One of multiple world-class par threes that Muirfield Village boasts, the 12th hole bears a striking resemblance to another iconic 12th hole in the world of golf. Measuring 184 yards from the Championship tees, a pond guards the front and right parts of the green. A large bunker protects the front of the green, with a smaller trap collecting tee shots that fly the green – particularly with a left pin location.
